A FEW ROAD TRIP TIPS FOR PETS

Tacoma Dogs Traveling

NAME TAG!

For many pet owners, their pets are their ‘babies. Don’t take a chance
of your pet getting away without proper identification that includes your name, address and phone number.

YOUR PETS CAR SEAT

You wouldn’t consider allowing your toddler to travel without a car seat. Securing your pet reduces injuries to him, your vehicle and even to you. There are many options available.
Harnesses, booster seats, carriers, seat belts, seat covers and more can be purchased through Toyota of Santa Fe’s parts department. If we don’t have exactly what you need, we are happy to order for you.
Pets should never be allowed to travel in the back of a truck bed. Also, please don’t allow your pet to risk eye injury by putting his head outside the window.
A crate should be large enough for your pet to stand, sit, lie down and turn around. It must be secured so it doesn’t move with an abrupt stop

PRE-TRAVEL TRAINING

There are many options for traveling with your pet. If using a ‘crate, it should be large enough for your pet to stand, sit, lie down and turn around in. Secure your pet’s crate so it will not slide or shift in the event of an abrupt stop. If you decide to forgo the crate, don’t allow your pet to ride with his head outside the window, and always keep him in the back seat in a harness attached to a seat buckle.

TRAVEL TRAINING YOUR PET

Your child wasn’t comfortable his first time in a car seat. Your pet may also have the same challenges. Reduce the stress of a long trip with some pre-travel training using the seat belt or carrier you plan to use. Start with a few short trips. Most pets are only in your car for annual shots. Don’t allow your pet to think that’s the only place your vehicle goes. How about a quick trip to a local park? Use some of the same techniques that work when teachin g your pet a new trick. Ask your veterinarian for tips when planning a long trip.

SEAT BELTS ARE ALWAYS A GOOD IDEA

There’s a reason people use seat belts. Its no different for your pets. Restraining them in a vehicle protects them in the case of an accident and reduces the chances of distraction for the driver. If possible use a carrier. But for larger pets, if you travel in a larger vehicle, a pet barrier might make more sense.
Pet Barriers protect the pet in the back of a large vehicle.
